I came especially to read Padre Mickey discuss the great and holy Polycarp, because you always write your bios of the saints fully, fervently and entertainingly. (I booed the tough guys in this one.) Then comes the message for us today: claims of persecution vs. the real thing.

I once got to hear the great Howard Galley wax forth at some length about the martyrdom of Polycarp, a verbal aria the likes of which I've never heard before or since. Howard was spellbinding, like Colleen Dewhurst commanding your attention in a Eugene O'Neill play, or like running into Louis Armstrong playing his trumpet in a lonely subway station - unexpected, mesmerizing, delighting. I don't remember much of what Howard said about Polycarp beyond his enormous faith and courage; what I remember was the great teacher/performer unleashed before my eyes and ears.

I've reverenced Polycarp ever since, as well as man who sang his song. Thank you, Michael, for singing today too.Josh Thomashttp://dailyoffice.org/noreply@blogger.com
