" said Olenyev. "I asked her, 'Do you need help?' She said, 'Yes!"

"It wasn't our intention to get into a fight," said Bukler. "We said, 'Let the girl go, and we'll leave.' We told them, 'Stop.'

"She was screaming, and all we did was look to help her. I got a bottle smashed over my head, and after that, I started fighting. But I got beat down.

"I was getting my ass kicked by 50 people."

Their friend called Olenyev's brother, Ivan, 22.

"When I showed up, there were a lot of people there, people on the left and people on the right, and then - 'Boom!' - I got hit and passed out," Ivan told The Post from his hospital bed.

Police sources said he was pounded senseless by 240-pound Timothy Dixon, 23, who was swinging a metal baseball bat.

Ivan suffered multiple facial fractures and will require plastic surgery.

The NYPD is looking for Dixon, who remains at large.

The teenage girl fled after the melee.

The two former Marines, meanwhile, insist that the violence had racial overtones, although the assault has not been labeled a bias crime.

Bukler said, "Those in the crowd were yelling, 'Hey, white boys, you're in the 'hood now!' We were yelling back, 'We don't care - we live here!'no_slappzhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04207475509053402475noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-36914208.post-25394040031510682072008-08-15T13:34:00.000-05:002008-08-15T13:34:00.000-05:00This is so moving thank you for writing it--made m...This is so moving thank you for writing it--made me cry, also.

As someone up-comment said, I hope if ever faced with such a situation, I have the heart and faith to do as these men have done.Canyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14737285360280766111noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-36914208.post-19481853547516505372008-08-14T23:56:00.000-05:002008-08-14T23:56:00.000-05:00Oh, Amen! These were Good Guys and God is Taking Ca...Oh, Amen!

These were Good Guys and God is Taking Care of them now To Be Sure. Therefore I was very moved by this description of Maximilan Kolbe on the Universalis site this morning:

"Maximilian Kolbe’s martyrdom is the least important thing about him. We are none of us likely to find ourselves in a position to emulate his sacrifice, and speculation as to the heroic way in which we would have behaved in his place is a pernicious waste of time. What is important is that he acted the way he did because of who he was – or, rather, because of who he had become. It is because of who he had become that we revere him as a saint: he would have been a saint (though perhaps not canonised) even if he had not been martyred. And that process of becoming is something we can all emulate. We can all become people for whom doing the right thing is obvious, natural, and easy. It requires no heroism, no special gifts: just perseverance, and prayer."

http://www.universalis.com/USA/20080814/today.htm

This reminds me of the line from a hymn, the name of which I cannot recall, but that goes something like "They were all saints of God, and I want to be one too"Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-36914208.post-38685598642904156262008-08-14T10:33:00.000-05:002008-08-14T10:33:00.000-05:00We have the only chapel in the country dedicated t...We have the only chapel in the country dedicated to Daniels at Dartmouth College's Episcopal campus ministry in Hanover, NH. +Gene Robinson rededicated the former St. Christopher Chapel in April at a very touching service with Ruby Sales present.
