The Rt. Rev. Julio E. Murray, Bishop of Panamá, sent out this appeal for funds and food to help those in the flooded areas. I did not receive information in regards to where those who live outside of Panamá and are interested in helping may send funds, but as soon as I know something I'll post it here. Below is Bishop Murray's letter, followed by Padre Mickey's rough, quite imperfect translation.
Hemos visto y escuchado en los medios de comunicación como las lluvias han causado situaciones de crisis en varios sectores de nuestra geografía nacional. Ya se han identificado varias comunidades que han quedado bajo agua y lodo y otras con afectaciones en Panamá Oeste, Panamá Centro, Panamá Este (Chepo, Bayano y Tortí) y la provincia de Colón. Algunas de estas comunidades han tenido que ser evacuadas, con sus campos de cultivos como pérdida total. Lo que describo es una situación de emergencia.
Las constantes y fuertes lluvias son ocasionadas por el cambio climático. Sabemos que estamos en temporada de lluvia pero la intensidad de la misma se lo debemos al impacto del cambio climático. Ante estos efectos todos somos víctimas, pero también podemos ser concientes de los daños que se ocasionan al planeta y hacer causa común para crear conciencia ante la URGENCIA de tratar estos temas y sus consecuencias.
Hemos recibido información que las Comunidades Indígenas y Campesinas que participan en nuestros programas sociales, han sido afectadas y que necesitan reubicarse y reiniciar su vida tan pronto bajen las aguas.
En esta ocasión hacemos un llamado para que las ofrendas de este domingo 12 de diciembre 2010, y las ofrendas que se reciban en los oficios durante la semana, sean destinadas para ayudar a los hermanos damnificados en Panamá. También hacemos un llamado para se hagan donaciones de agua embotellada, comida seca y/o enlatada. Todos los fondos y donaciones que se reciban en la Oficina Diocesana, serán canalizados por nuestra oficina de Promoción Ministerio y Educación Social (PROMESA). Este es un llamado a nuestra generosidad, y aun cuando la Iglesia Episcopal de Panamá esta enfrentando tiempos de crisis, Dios ha puesto en nuestros corazones su compasión y por su gracia podemos extender nuestras manos para ayudar a nuestros hermanos mas necesitados en este tiempo.
Pido sus oraciones y apoyo para nuestro pueblo y el Ministerio de las Iglesias e Instituciones Episcopales y religiosas bajo la responsabilidad de los diferentes pastores en las áreas afectadas, las congregaciones, el liderazgo que las acompaña y los cientos de niños, mujeres, jóvenes y hombres del pueblo que son víctimas de este desastre.
As we have seen and heard in the media, the rains have caused crisis situations in various geographic sectors of our nation. Several communities have been Have been identified as being under water and mud and other areas affected in Panamá such as Western Panamá, Central Panamá, Eastern Panamá (Chepo, Bayano and Tortí) and the province of Colón. Some of these communities have been evacuated, with fields of crops at a total loss. This can be described as an emergency situation.
Constant heavy rains are caused by climate change. We know that we are still in the rainy season but the intensity of the rains is the result of climate change. To this end we are all victims, but we can be aware of the damage caused to the planet and make common cause to create awareness of the URGENCY of addressing these issues and their consequences.
We have received information that the indigenous and peasant communities involved in our social programs have been affected and need to resettle and restart their lives once the waters recede.
On this occasion, we make an appeal that the offerings on Sunday December 12, 2010, and offerings received in the offices during the week, before our brothers who are victims in Panamá. We also call for donations of bottled water, dry and/or canned food. All funds and donations received in the Diocesan Office will be channeled through PROMESA, the Office for Promotion of Social Ministry and Education (PROMESA means Promise - Padre Mickey). This is an appeal to our generosity, and even when the Episcopal Church of Panamá is facing times of crisis, God has placed in our hearts the compassion and grace to extend our hands to help our brothers in their time of much need.
I ask your prayers and support for our people and the Ministry of the Churches, Educational Institutions, and religious under the responsibility of the various pastors in the affected areas, the congregations, the leadership that walks with them and the hundreds of children, women, youth and men of the villages who are victims of this disaster.
