St. Nicholas, Bishop of Myra
Almighty God, in your love you gave your servant Nicholas of Myra a perpetual name for deeds of kindness both on land and sea: Grant, we pray, that your Church may never cease to work for the happiness of children, the safety of sailors, the relief of the poor, and the help of those tossed by tempests of doubt or grief; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirt, one God, for ever and ever. Amen
I haven't had a chance to go over to his site and check, but I'm sure MadPriest has a post explaining how St. Nicholas lived in England for many years, have stopped in Liverpool on his way back from Palestine on his way to Myra.

I'm afraid that us Brits can't lay claim to Saint Nick. It is true that Father Christmas was invented by Queen Victoria (although they pretended it came from her husband, Prince Albert, because in those days women weren't allowed to invent things - which is still the case in Scotland). Saint Nick was from the Netherlands where he is revered because one cold, winter morning he stuck his finger in a dyke and saved the whole of mainland Europe. He also invented chimneys, which was well appreciated because up till then living rooms got very smokey, very smokey, in deed. So smokey, quite often the mediaevil peasants couldn't see their television screens. So - a good bloke and very Dutch.
I think he was composing on the fly !
