Disgusted!

Remember back in July when Bush ordered Josh Bolten and Harriet Miers not to testify before Congress? Weren't contempt of Congress citations issued at that time? I remember a claim that the entire House was supposed to move on the citations after their August recess. Has anything happened? Have any actions been taken?

It seems to me that the reason the Bush regime continues to flaunt the law and do whatever they want is because they know that no one will hold them accountable. Sure, Karl Rove and Alberto Gonzales have resigned, but until the House starts locking these people up in the basement and forcing them to do what is right, Bush and his criminal accomplices will continue to flip us all the bird.

And what's all this with Democrats acting like Republican Apparatchiks? A young man is tasered by police during a John Kerry appearance, and now I hear that Medea Benjamin of Code Pink was pulled out of a Hillary Clinton rally for wearing a shirt that read "Troops. Home. Now." Leave that kind of crap to the Republicans, they come to authoritarianism naturally, but I expect much, much more tolerance of free speech from my own party.

Then, to top it all off, both the vote to reinstate Habeus Corpus and the Webb amendment were narrowly defeated by Republicans. Disgusting!

I guess my question is: WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON WITH YOU PEOPLE IN THE U.S.A.? I guess you're just like everyone else on the planet; powerless to do anything about your leaders. And I had been taught that the U.S. was different.....

I'm with you, Padre. If the Dems would show some spine and force the Repubs to filibuster against the Constitutional rights of the people, and let some Code Pinkies in the gallery to shout down the scumbag mofo's.

Spine free Dems are more disappointing than the morals free Repubs.

I don't think we really are different, at least we aren't anymore. It's appaling that Habeus Corpus was taken away in the first place, let alone that we couldn't get enough votes for its restoration. What kind of a country am I raising my daughter in?

These are sad times indeed. You did a great job of calling them out, but sadly no one seems to be listening.

Most people don't even know what habeus corpus is and don't care.

As long as they have their dvr, their great room, their suv and their comfort which all translates to some bizarre kind of safety, they do not care.

Pathetic.

The U.S. is different. It's quite different.
There's not a judge in Canada who wouldn't issue a summons or an arrest warrant for the Prime Minister and/or any of his or her cabinet, and in the latter case, the RCMP would carry it out. Because that's their job.
And they know where the Prime Minister and cabinet are at all times, because that's their job.
There's a reason why the police can't enter Parliament without the consent of the Commons. Because they would.

I think it's important to note that the smug certainty of the neo-cons is a function of their arrogance and their vanity, and not because they are actually invulnerable to political harm. They aren't. They just think they are. And that doesn't work in their favour.

I See You!
