Washoe, the chimpanze who learned American Sign Language has died at age 42. Read about her here.
I first learned of her on either Nova or some other PBS science program back in the late 1970's and have always been intrigued by her story, especially when she combined the signs for "water" and "bird" when she saw a swan.
