Almost Enough To Get Me To Drink Vodka

I don't drink clear liquids; well, Commenter John and I used to drink Gin and Tonics, but only as protection against malaria (freshen your drink, Padre? Just a splash, Padre!). I drinks Jamesons or Ron Abuelo. I thought this advertisment was funny, but apparently it has some folks in the U.S.A. in an uproar. They can't be bothered to get upset about the war crimes of Bush and Cheney, and they can't get worked-up enough to end the war in Iraq, but, boy, once the Swedes team up with los Mexicanos for the Dreaded Reconquista, they goes nuts!!! You notice that Florida is not included, because no one wants Florida; well maybe los Cubanos.

Seems like an ad that they would run here in Mexico! But I have not seen it. I certainly get it though!!

In an Absolute World we would not have lost 55% of our patrimony exactly 160 years ago this past FEB!

It would really get them more if it had the formal name; United Mexican States.

They did the best they could, David; they probably used an estadoünidense Ad Agency.

Your post sent me on a search. Estadounidense are Absolutely livid.

Here's one of their responses on an inti-Absolute website.

From what I can gather, it was an ad agency in Ciudad de Mexico, DF.

VERY nice, David!

Well, then, my response is:¡Viva Mexico!
I wonder why they couldn't get the name right?

Estaba al punto de mandar mi mensaje cuando perdî mi conexión a la red. Grrrrrrrr.

So I will try again.

Years ago I joked with then Bishop of Cuernavaca (and later Primado) the late Lupe Saucedo that, being a Californian, I kept my Spanish functional so I would be always ready for the Reconquista.

He responded with a straight face and dry tone, "We do not call it a Reconquista. California has always been ours."

Loved that man!

Now that I live in Nuevo México, the principle still applies.

Estoy listo.

Así como Florida, ¿podemos dejar Tejas a cualquier idiota lo desee?

¡Vivan los Estados Unidos de México!

Pablo, mi querido hermano, somos los Estados Unidos Mexicanos!

Excellent!

I have a friend who says vodka is the only thing that doesn't give him headaches the next day, which is why he orders a Cosmopolitan even though it is a girly drink ;-).

Gin apparently rots your brain and other organs much more than vodka. So drink up. Nasdarovia! Or in this case, skol and salud!

P.S. Recipe for Groovy UV (UV for the University of Vermont, because of one of the ingredients below):
One part vodka or gin
One part maple syrup
Two parts lemon juice
Shake with ice and strain.
I'm serious, it's really good. Two tasteful gay men introduced me to it on a chilly Thanksgiving weekend some years ago.

And of course ¡viva los Estados Unidos Mexicanos! (Padre Mickey, did I ever mention to you that my parents were married in Mexico D.F.?)

Brother David said...

Padre, although Estados Unidos Mexicanos is printed and minted on our money, so we all have the name in our pocket, in reality most everyone refers to la Republica Mexicana as the common name of our country.

Gin rots your brain?! Now that I am in soju territory I don't have to worry. I do remember the guy who ran the restaurant at the Gran Hotel David once warned me to stay away from those cana drinks -- he said THEY rot your innards. But then he was pushing their wine...

They're up in arms about this but not the way ads portray women as objects? What does that say about our culture?

I'm studying gender right now and I've seen some horribly sexist ads. That's more offensive to me than this. I've always liked Mexican things... probably because I'm a native Californian. ¡Viva Mexico!

The Lovely Mona knows what she is talking about!

Not that that was ever in doubt.

Well this post and another that I read elsewhere, have supplied me with all the tools for hilarity at my place this morning.

At least I think it is hilarious when synchronicity delivers an unclear vodka to my blog on the same day that I read this.

Just sayin' - go and see if you can (ahem) clear up your good name mi Padre.

And Lovely Mona, on a more serious note, maybe you want to read my recent diatribe about women, image and culture.

Unlike the Padre, I have taken to drinking the clear liquids, except for wine, which MUST BE RED! I drink clear rum and vodka on occasions, but given my circumstance, I tend to drink the cheap stuff. Burnett's and Vodka of the Gods at Trader Joe's are very cheap indeed!

I'm a little surprised at Absolut for clearing this ad. They had to know how many people it would piss off, and some of those people drink like fishes! Or at least I think that's how you get to look like O'Reilly and Coulter.

So Anglos steal as well, David? (For the record, YOU, in addition to Mimi, are owed a "bunch of flowers and a box of chocolates" for a comment made to you a few days back on another site!)

Actually, that's a very funny ad., but there always seems to be someone around with no sense of humor, doesn't there? Thanks.

I know Florida and Louisiana were ceded by Spain, but would you d like those too, while you're about it? Among other reasons, it will deprive my home insurance of one of its main excuses for continually boosting my premiums - LA & FL hurricane damage.

You should give the remaining part of the North-West to Canada.

They don't want Louisiana either, but that's OK, because our former owners, the French, want us back, and we want them to buy us back. So what's the problem? Why no movement?

Here's a map of the Louisiana Territory. Seems there's a bit of an overlap.

I'm confused, Que es la problema? Looks like a map of Aztlan to me.

Lapin, I am not following, tell me more, please. At the Mad One's? 'Splain it to me Lapin. As Padre's nieta would say - gibitame!

Mimi, this is what we lost; the Mexican Cession. And this is the mess with Tejas. The only overlap looks to be in Texas.

Doorman-Priest, do not hold your breath, the Estadouniddense do not give anything, unless it is to their advantage. They gave the Phillipines their freedom because it was cheaper in the long run!

From the Wikipedia;
President Ulysses S. Grant, who as a young army officer had served in Mexico under General Taylor, recalled in his Memoirs, published in 1885, that:
"Generally, the officers of the army were indifferent whether the annexation was consummated or not; but not so all of them. For myself, I was bitterly opposed to the measure, and to this day regard the war, which resulted, as one of the most unjust ever waged by a stronger against a weaker nation. It was an instance of a republic following the bad example of European monarchies, in not considering justice in their desire to acquire additional territory."
Grant also expressed the view that the war against Mexico had brought God's punishment on the United States in the form of the American Civil War:
"The Southern rebellion was largely the outgrowth of the Mexican war. Nations, like individuals, are punished for their transgressions. We got our punishment in the most sanguinary and expensive war of modern times."
In 1879, while in China during his post presidential world tour, Grant told John Russell Young: "I had very strong opinions on the subject. I do not think there was ever a more wicked war than that waged by the United States on Mexico. I had a horror of the Mexican War, and I have always believed that it was on our part most unjust. The wickedness was not in the way our soldiers conducted it, but in the conduct of our government in declaring was. We had no claim on Mexico. Texas had no claim beyond the Nueces River, and yet we pushed on to the Rio Grande and crossed it. I am always ashamed of my country when I think of that invasion"

The reference David was to when you said "You see, that is a "white" thing. You have enough money for a TV and maybe even basic cable.",

Which elicited the response

"No. It's a mexican thing. I stole it."

Hey, if you didn't notice it, whoam I to care?

I noticed it and considered the source. I think that is the same thread where "Red" eventually went off on you, as well as posting some racist cr*p (the Lovly Mona has sensitive eyes!). When I called "Red" on it MP deleted my posts.

Well, on the brighter side of *things*, Mexico doesn't have to claim George W. Bush as President from Texas...of course, I grew up amongst Mexican Americans in Los Angeles (where the famous families were Spanish Land Grant families) and I love Mexico and Mexicans and they never would have voted for such a idiot crook (sometimes crooks, but never idiot ones)...I now live a little further South but I still visit Mexico when I want to FEEL/SEE really good and feel at home.

VIVA MEXICO (I spent much of my teens/youth commuting on the train from Mexicali/Calexico or Nogales, Arizona/Nogales, Sonora borders to all points South (every chance I had, which were many)...I had the best of both world in my youth and my Dad, the Englishman, LOVED all things Mexican and encouraged my travel escapades!

I could tell you happy and romantic stories, but instead, I'll just sit here, quietly and grin and be grateful for many things/times Mexican.

Intertesting (at least to me), I just received, last week, a "commission" to paint a Virgin of Guadalupe (I visited the shrine many times both before and after modern exposure set in)..of course, it will be in my style/format and ought be quite different when it is finished (I'll send a pix to Padre when it is done)...the clients are Japaneese Americans from Hawaii who have a home here too...a home filled with mixed cultural treasurers.

VIVA MEXICO...orta vez!

It was the "racist ct*p" that caused me to snap and refuse to back off, but all seems to be under control now, so let's all - me included - work to keep it that way. The British do not always understand the US take on race. Poking a stick into the American hornets' nest and standing back to watch the fun is fine where barbecue is concerned, but it can, and did, go badly wrong if one tries the same approach with race. I write this as one with feet in both camps - English born & raised; living 30+ years in the US South.

My dogs' chewed-up bunrab says "Hi! & Condolences" to Padre Mickey's chewed-up bunrab. G'nite.
