Día de Independencia

Today is Independence from Colombia day here in Panamá. That's why we celebrated All Soul's last night instead of transferring it to today (as the Ordo Calendar instructs). I was hoping to go find some parades to photograph, but it's raining (it IS November in Panamá!), so I'll post these photos of kids practicing at Instituto Episcopal San Cristóbal and the flag flying above the school. I guess them kids is marching in the rain somewhere this morning ¡pobrecitos!

The Panamanian National Anthem:
Alcanzamos por fin la victoria en el campo feliz de la unión;
con ardientes fulgores de gloria se ilumina la nueva nacion.

Es preciso cubrir con un velo del pasado el calvario y la cruz ;
y que adorne el azul de tu cielo de concordia la esplendida luz.

El progreso acaricia tus lares al compás de sublime canción ;
ves rugir a tus pies ambos mares que dan rumbo a tu noble misión.

Alcanzamos por fin la victoria en el campo feliz de la unión;
con ardientes fulgores de gloria se ilumina la nueva nacion.

En tu suelo cubierto de flores, a los besos del tibio terral,
terminaron guerreros fragores; solo reina el amor fraternal.

Adelante la pica y la pala, al trabajo sin mas dilación ;
y seremos asi prez y gala, de este mundo feraz de Colón.

Nice, eh? Nothing about "bombs bursting in air" or descriptions of the flag, just a song about hope for the nation.

Are there fireworks? And, if so, how does Chompita handle them? Little Eddie wanted to let her know he wasn't afraid of no fireworks, he just barks at them, so if she is a-skeered of them, he'll protect her.

Kirk, tell Little Eddie that there are fire-crackers all year 'round in this neighborhood. And fireworks are launched almost every Friday night over at Panamá Viejo, the ruins of the original Ciudad de Panamá Hispanola, which is just down the street a bit. So, she's not afraid. She does bark loudly and frantically when lightening hits near the house!

Tell Chompita that is normal! I have been known to bark loudly and frantically when lightening hits near the house, also.

Little Eddie and the late Mr. Willis Woo once were outside tied out when lightning hit a tree. I wished I could have been Dr. Doolittle, b/c when I went outside, Mr. Willis Woo was frantically woo-wooing and I could only imagine what he was trying to tell me. Little Eddie was safely ensconced in his doghouse peeking out with a look that only said, "Oh, Woo, what are you so worked up about. It missed!"

I See You!
