President Obama as a progressive, FDR Democrat is what I am hoping for! But I also think about FDR's detractors in the GOP, the Supreme Court of the 1930s, and Fr. Coughlin. Obama may have some of the same foes. That pic is missing FDR's cigarette holder! Last I heard, Obama was a smoker but was trying to quit. This is a great pic!

Padre Mickey, I think President-elect Obama's politics and optimism are congruent with the Time Magazine cover. Whether or not it is a "real" cover, I think Obama's politics and the need for renewal in the USA, in some ways, have striking similarities with the mess FDR inherited in March 1933 from Hoover (I think the inauguration was in March in those times). Remember that old Democratic Party theme song: Happy Days are Here Again!!! I think we could, at least, sing "Hopeful Days are Here Again" in January 2009.

As I sit here at 9:30 pm and watch the History channel as it describes FDR's early days and years I am most hopeful. Hope is one of those gifts that is really understood until it is needed.
