It's Monday: Let's Rant! AND Happy Birthday!

Yesterday I read this great article in the New York Times about teaching evolution to the children of SFSH*. Last week I posted on my bewilderment in regards to those who believe that their Christian faith and even their salvation depends upon accepting the Bible as the inerrant Word of God. I was perplexed at how they continued to believe the Creation Myth in opposition to the fossil record. I have a clearer understanding of what's going on because of that NYT article. One of the students stated that "Evolution is telling you that you're like an animal. .. That's why people stand strong with Christianity, because it teaches people to lead a good life and not do wrong." Would that all Christians led good lives and did not do wrong, and I know lots of people who are not Christians and many who don't believe in God at all who live good lives and do not do wrong, but it's the statement about being an animal that I find interesting.

When I was a little boy (before we moved to Okinawa) I watched The Mickey Mouse Club every day. I've always remembered the following song:

I sang it all the time, and no one I knew found the song objectionable. Heck, even my mother, the AofG girly, sang the song with me and reminded me that I was a human animal. Now, it's true that we never heard a positive word about evolution in our science classes at Okinawa Christian School, but I learned about evolution when I was in school in the U.S.A., and I don't remember any protests or any discussion on the Creation Myth.

So when did everything go so screwy? Why is anyone interested in placating the Biblical Literalists?

Also, yesterday was Tía Sue's birthday. Happy Belated Birthday, Tía Sue! She's in Philly right now.
Today is Our Man In Guatemala, Leonardo Ricardo's birthday! ¡Feliz Cumpliaños, Leonardo! Go over to his place and give him da luvs.

Who can think, who can reason, who can read. I still remember that, too, Padre, 45+ years after the fact.

In a semi-related post on my blog, I gotsa 'nuther Dumbass Design™ entry over at Lotsa 'Splainin' today. It turns out Rhinoceros Hornbills are kind of irritable.

I See You!
